You Know You’re an American When…

24 11 2011

1)  You remember to give thanks on the second to last weekend of November even when you’re on an overnight bus across the lush Andes and the barren deserts of Peru (2010).

2)  You feel the need to celebrate with, at the very least, American-style (ie. thick and greasy) pizza even when you are stuck in staff training for SuperCamp in Singapore.  And of course, go around in a circle and give thanks with a crew of Americans and Singaporeans (2009).

3)  You, along with the rest of the American community in Singapore, organize a potluck–and just for one day, you feel like you’re home again and allowed to act in the good ol’ American ridiculousness that is the American way (ie. beer pong tournament and blasting music from the 80s and just fun boisterousness) (2008)

** You recognize the quintessentially hypocritical tradition of the holiday (ah, the poor turkeys and Native Americans…); yet, even when after you spend enough time on the road to hate–like really, really despise–Western hypocrisy, you still love Thanksgiving.

Here’s to my first Thanksgiving in the United States in three years.  For that, I’m thankful – from Seattle, Washington.
